Equipment

  • 1 Saucepan
  • 1 Measuring Cup
  • 1 whisk or spoon
  • 1 clean container for storage

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 cups water
  • Optional: 1-2 drops natural food coloring red

Instructions
 

  • Prepare the Nectar
  • In a saucepan, combine 1 cup of granulated sugar with 4 cups of water
  • Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar completely dissolves
  • Bring to a gentle boil and cook for 2-3 minutes
  • Remove from heat and let cool completely
  • Customize (Optional)
  • Optional: Add 1-2 drops of natural red food coloring to make the nectar more attractive to hummingbirds
  • Store and Use
  • Pour the cooled nectar into a clean container
  • Store in the refrigerator until ready to use
  • Fill your hummingbird feeder with the homemade nectar

Notes

  • This recipe makes about 1 quart of hummingbird nectar
  • Store unused nectar in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks
  • Clean your hummingbird feeder regularly to prevent bacteria growth
  • Do not use honey or artificial sweeteners as they can harm hummingbirds
  • The ratio of sugar to water should always be 1:4 for proper nutrition
